In the Iliad, the Trojan War was unleashed by the goddess Eris, who throws an apple dedicated "to the most beautiful" into a room of goddesses. The ensuing argument between the goddesses over who owned the apple was the catalyst for the war. Apples, ever since, have been associated with discord.
